Oil-based mud (OBM) uses oil as the continuous phase and is preferred in high-temperature, high-pressure wells, deepwater drilling, and formations containing reactive shale where water would cause swelling and wellbore instability.Water-based mud (WBM) uses water as the continuous phase and is more commonly used in less challenging formations where environmental considerations and cost are priorities.
